@Hatter|Alice, Back In Wonderland

“Lorina, I’m not a child anymore.”

Alice moved her arms across her chest as she stared her sister down. Lorina always thought she was better than Alice. She always thought she could change Alice… that wasn’t going to happen, wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. The glare of her blue eyes merged in the reflection of her sister’s blue eyes and all Alice could do was roll her eyes and throw her arms out in despair as she made her way towards the front door of their house.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“Out!”

Lorina had informed Alice of their mother’s intentions. Marrying her off, indeed. That wasn’t going to happen – they should marry Lorina off, she was the perfect one after all. The one they had afforded to send off to finishing school. Thank god for that. Alice couldn’t have imagined herself in finishing school. The stories that Lorina had told her… the horror stories! Balancing books on your heads, learning larger vocabularies, calligraphy… she just wanted to sit and read books with stimulating pictures. She didn’t want to balance them on her head and walk.

Alice would much rather find herself doing a headstand than that – that was the kind of balancing act she preferred. Although to do that she most likely would have been quite the sight. She would imagine coming home quite messy and dirty – and imagining the look on Lorina’s face… she wouldn’t have minded to see her sister’s eyes widen as far as that – or her mouth drop. Alice giggled to herself as she walked out slamming the door behind her, ignoring the call of her name from her sister.

Her blue eyes found her beige and brown cat Dinah playing in the daisy patch as she made her way over. She laughed, bending over and picking her up, finding a slight discomfort. “Why Dinah, what happened to that little kitten I could carry around with ease?” She pondered playing with the pink ribbon wrapped around her dearest friend’s neck. “You’re the only one here who understands me.” She whispered kissing the cat’s head. The cat meowed in reply as Alice glanced around the daisies.

Many a memories came flooding back of Wonderland and all the friends she had made there – all the enemies she had encountered… and the ones that were neither or. She secretly had been thinking of Wonderland a lot lately – she never would have mentioned to Lorina. Lorina never believed her. Just a silly dream, Alice. Well a dream it was not – it was real – her world. Alice moved herself against the familiar tree that she had once awaked from Wonderland underneath.

Her mind wondered over the Hatter, Hare and Dormouse wondering if they were at their on-going tea party at that moment. How she wished that she could be there. If she would actually get the chance to taste some tea… she was actually very fond of tea. That was perhaps the only thing that her sister and her had in common. The countless tea parties they shared – but she bet her sister’s prim and proper tea parties were nothing and paled in comparison compared to the Hatter’s. It had been quite some time since she had set eyes on Wonderland – she was but a child then.

Things had changed and she had gotten older but she wasn’t going to look towards Wonderland as Neverland. She had read a book once about a boy who never grew up. Thankfully the book had pictures and she didn’t find herself dozing off in anguish of her sister’s narration. Neverland was not a place for adults… but she was more than sure that Wonderland would accept her of all people back. That was just it. Alice really, more than anything, wanted to go back.

In the corner of her eyes she spotted something, a mere flicker really, of white. She had noticed it and straight ahead turned to look towards whatever it was – she was sure she had seen that… that familiar shape… “Come on Dinah.” She spoke as she looked down to the cat in her hands. She went to chase after what she was sure was the rabbit before sighing and looked down to her friend. “This might not be the right time for you to come with me.” She whispered, placing a gentle kiss upon the cat’s head once more before placing her into the daisies where she found comfort in trying to eat. Alice gave a melodious laugh at the cat’s antics before realising she had become too entranced in her cat and forgot she had seen a white rabbit!

Running, her hands grasping at her blue dress with her white pinafore… her mind just wondering as to why she was always wearing such colours (and a pinafore) when she was looking for Wonderland. Her blonde hair fell behind her, chasing after her, as she ran looking for where that rabbit could have gone. “Hello!” She called out, her voice as pleading as her eyes as she searched. Anything – if that was the rabbit from Wonderland… he could take her back! “Hello!?” Alice found herself looking towards a giant rabbit hole – did they really make rabbit holes that big? She wondered to herself as she moved over, kneeling beside it and looking down into the darkness, no she couldn’t see anything… but it could be… it had to be!

She took the plunge – down the rabbit hole –and back to Wonderland. She recalled how to eat the cake and drink the potion, remembering the key. The flower gardens with their complaints and compliments – and the woods with the many signs that would lead you in one direction or the other. Only this time she found she didn’t have the company of the Cheshire cat to confuse or mislead her – just perfect. As much as she would have enjoyed the company – even if he was a trickster – the cat had the usual ability of making Alice laugh.

Alice remembered her way – she had been so traumatised by her first visit of the woods that she recalled how to get to where she really wanted to go. Her mind was a flurry of thoughts and curiousness as she wanted to go everywhere in Wonderland. To see and greet everyone that she had met, but there was one place she wanted to go before she went anywhere else… the mad tea party… she missed the Hatter and his friends. That was where she wanted to go – they were who she wanted to see at that moment.

And so down that path she went…
